Luther E. Hughes, Sr., age 91, of Trenton, FL, passed away on July 16, 2018 at ET York Hospice in Gainesville, FL. He was born in Bellwood, AL on October 1, 1926 to the late Burley and Carrie Hughes. He was an active member of Woodmen Life and Trenton Church of God. He was a volunteer of Trenton Fire Department, Gilchrist County Sheriff Office Crimewatch and Ayers Health and Rehabilitation Center. Luther was a World War II and Korean War Veteran. He was also a member of many gospel bands, the latest being the Gospel Travelers. He worked for many years with Capelity Brothers of Miami, building roads and he retired from United Fuel as a truck driver in 1988.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Thelma Pert; his brothers, Hershel, Herbert, Joe and Burley Hughes, Jr; his son, Luther E. Hughes, Jr. and his granddaughter, Missy Thompson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Judy Hughes; daughter, Ann (Lamar) Waters, of Bonifay, FL; sons, Tommy Hughes of Tupelo MS and Jamie (Dee) Hughes of Trenton, FL; step-sons, Marvin (Jeanne) Hassell and William (Liz) Hassell, both of Trenton, FL and his step-daughter, Marie (Billy) Pendarvis of Old Town, FL; sister, Opal Strickland of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mr. Hughes will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 20, 2018 in the chapel at Watson Funeral Home with Pastor Dewayne Bowdoin and Minister Everritt Heaton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment with Military Honors to follow at Trenton Cemetery.
Food and refreshments will be served at Woodmen of the World
Lodge 626 in Trenton immediately following the services.
