Glen St. Mary

Joseph Wilson Gilliam, affectionately known as Joe, passed away on November 30, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 76. Born on September 14, 1948, in Clearwater, Florida, Joe lived a life rich in service and dedication, both to his community and his family.

Joe was a 1966 graduate of Bell High School. After graduation he would go on to contribute significantly to Gilchrist County. His commitment to public service began with his tenure at the Department of Corrections began in 1971 with the newly built Lancaster Youth Center where he would continue with the state until 1982. He also enjoyed working with the Wilson Brothers Joe, Roy, and Milam in home building and mobile home sales for 13 years. He would then go on to serve as the Clerk of Courts in 1996, running unopposed until his retirement in 2012. His support of the community was apparent through his membership of the Gilchrist County Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Gilchrist County Education Foundation, and a 50-year member of the William T. Carlton #46 Masonic Lodge. Because of his love and dedication to the community, Mr. Gilliam received the 2009 Gilchrist County Citizen of the Year award.

A proud veteran, he served in the United States Navy reflecting his dedication to his country and his strong sense of duty. He served from 1967-1970 as an aviation jet mechanic in California and the Republic of Vietnam until he was honorably discharged. That sense of duty didn’t stop when he left the service but continued with his support and membership of the American Legion for more than 40 years and Vietnam Veterans of America.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene Gilliam of Glen St. Mary; his son, Brian (Marisa) Gilliam of Trenton; his grandchildren, Logan (Lauren) Gilliam of Chiefland and Carly and Maddox Gilliam of Trenton; his great-granddaughter, Audrey Rose Gilliam of Chiefland; as well as his brother, David (Kathy) Gilliam of Bell, and sister, Ruth Ann (Lee) Zandanel of Largo.

Joe's passions extended into the great outdoors; he cherished camping and fishing, activities that brought him joy and connection with nature. He will be remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for his warm spirit and loving presence in the lives of his family.

Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Deloris Gilliam, and his parents, Wilson and Willie B. Gilliam. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James E. Gilliam.
