James William Mash III, a devoted veteran, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away on March 13, 2025, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Born on April 14, 1954, in Nitro, West Virginia, James lived a life of remarkable service and compassion.
A true American hero, James dedicated 24 years of his life to military service, serving with distinction in both the Army and the Marines. His commitment to his country extended beyond his military career. For over a decade, he continued to support his fellow veterans as a dedicated Veteran's Service Officer for Gilchrist County, tirelessly working to ensure that those who served received the support and recognition they deserved.
Family held a special place in James' heart. He was a beloved husband to his wife Janet, a loving father to their two sons, James and Joseph, and a doting grandfather to his two granddaughters, Alison and Arielle. His family will fondly remember him for his selfless spirit, his unwavering willingness to help others, his incredible sense of humor and the profound impact on the lives he touched.
Even in his personal life, James’ compassion extended to his faithful companion, Dasher, his beloved family dog, who was a constant source of joy and comfort.
Those who knew James will remember a man of integrity, courage and kindness- a true patriot who lived his life in service to others. His legacy of compassion, humor, and dedication will continue to inspire his family, friends, and countless veterans he helped throughout his life.
James is survived by his loving wife, Janet Mash; his two sons, James W. Mash IV and Joseph C. Mash; his two granddaughters Alison and Arielle Mash; his brothers, Earl Mash and Johnny Mash; his sisters, Jeanette Lonas and Emma Durost; and many very special nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his parents James William Mash Jr. and Goldie Mash; and his two sisters Barbara Marshall and Betty Sova.
A memorial service to honor James’ life and celebrate his remarkable journey will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Watson-Milton Funeral Home, Trenton at 12:00 PM. James will be laid to rest on Friday, April 4, 2025, at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, at 1:30 PM.
