August Raymond Verzaro, Jr, age 76, of Bell, FL, passed away on February 19, 2024, at his home. He was born on March 14, 1947, in Bridgeport, CT, to August Sr and Mary (Trschany) Verzaro. When Augie was a child, his family relocated to the warm climate of Ft. Lauderdale where he graduated from Stranahan High School in 1964. After graduating, Augie enlisted in the United States Army. He served 13 months in Vietnam and was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division known as the Screaming Eagles.
After service, he returned to Ft. Lauderdale and married the love of his life, Kathleen McCabe. In 1982, The couple wanted to move out of the big city and Augie had two requirements for a new home; one, near the water and two, a school that offered K-12. After searching around, they landed on the river in Bell, FL. His love for water dates back to childhood where he had a passion for marine and boat repair. He worked to obtain a captains license so he could charter fishing trips. Augie was extremely talented at repairing and creating things. He would tediously design and craft his own fishing rods. If you could name it, he could fix it, especially anything dealing with wood. He took pride in his carpentry and the craftsmanship required to make beautiful things. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and VFW.
Augie is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Kathy Verzaro of Bell; his daughter, Kathleen Nicole Verzaro of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and his two dogs, Odieo and Vito.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his dog, Leo.
A graveside service to honor Augie’s life will be held on Monday, February 26, at 1:00 pm at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Watson-Milton Funeral Home, Trenton. 352-463-8888. www.WatsonMilton.com
